Sore Throat

A sore throat, medically referred to as pharyngitis, is a painful, dry, scratchy, or irritated feeling in the back of the throat. It is a highly common symptom that is characterized by inflammation of the mucosal lining of the pharynx, which is the tube connecting the back of the mouth and nose to the esophagus.
Common Symptoms
The discomfort associated with a sore throat can vary in intensity and is frequently accompanied by other localized signs:
  • Painful swallowing or difficulty talking
  • Visible redness and swelling in the back of the mouth or on the tonsils
  • A raw, burning, or scratchy sensation
  • Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
  • White patches or pus forming on the tonsils
Underlying Causes
A sore throat is typically a secondary symptom of an infection or environmental irritation rather than a standalone condition.
  • Viral Infections: The vast majority of cases are caused by viruses, such as those responsible for the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or glandular fever.
  • Bacterial Infections: Less frequently, bacteria cause the inflammation. The most common bacterial culprit is Group A Streptococcus, leading to what is commonly known as strep throat.
  • Environmental and Mechanical Irritants: Non-infectious causes include breathing dry air, chronic mouth-breathing during sleep, allergies, acid reflux, exposure to tobacco smoke or pollution, and muscle strain from yelling or prolonged speaking.


General Recovery and Clinical Progression
Most standard sore throats resolve naturally within 4 to 7 days using simple supportive care like hydration, rest, and throat lozenges.
However, because severe throat inflammation can impact the airway or signal a more serious underlying infection, certain symptoms require prompt medical assessment. You should consult a healthcare provider if you experience an inability to swallow liquids or saliva, difficulty breathing, a high fever, a restricted ability to open the mouth, or if the soreness persists for more than a week without improvement.
